Overall, while eventually they truly became best friends during Rigby's graduation, we cannot overlook how this friendship was initially toxic and rooted in deceit.Ĭouple things I wanna address here, I'm not being unfair to Rigby at all, the wall buddy episode was literally because Rigby was too lazy to clean his room, and I'm not sure how you can accuse me of being biased when most of my analysis was critiquing Mordecai's behaviour.Īlso it seems like you're downplaying Rigby's actions in that episode, Rigby literally asked Margaret out in front of him when he knew Mordecai was trying to ask her out and then continuously mocks him throughout the episode, dude was saying he was gonna make out with his friend's crush, you can criticise Mordecai for bailing out on Rigby but I'm not sure how you can say Rigby's actions were justified, it was literally over a movie, not something that is necessarily that important. Rigby was the one who provoked Mordecai throughout the entire episode about going on a date with Mordecai's crush. While it's easy to simply just say "haha Mordecai simp lol" you first have to understand the context. The most infamous dispute that splits Mordecai and Rigby fans is the episode where Mordecai kills Rigby. Despite all of this, Rigby would rarely show appreciation or remorse and would rather consistently get Mordecai in trouble at times out of just pure laziness such as the Wall Buddy episode. Rigby may not have had malicious intent when faking Mordecai's rejection letter, however it was still a selfish decision that ruined Mordecai's future. It was Mordecai's connections that helped them get the park jobs and it was Mordecai who introduced him to Eileen. While Rigby should be commended for having a stable relationship and improving his life, it does not change the fact that he would have never gotten to that point without Mordecai. Mordecai later confesses to Rigby that he always felt good about being better than him but manages to swallow his insecurity and support his friend in the most important moment of his life. This in turn makes Mordecai feel like shit which is understandable, as the dynamic of their friendship has now completely switched as now it is Rigby who has his life sorted out and improved whereas Mordecai is in the same position as he was at the beginning of the show. He enrolls back into high school to receive his diploma and makes amends with both his brother and father. The most tragic aspect of this dynamic is when Mordecai's life continues to stagnate and arguably get worse with multiple failed romantic relationships whereas Rigby begins to get his life on track upon dating Eileen. The best example being when Rigby covered all of Mordecai's shifts so he and C.J could hang out, Mordecai in return refused to give Rigby credit for covering his shifts and instead said "it's the least you could do" while laughing at him alongside his co workers. To furthur expand upon this point, Mordecai's insecurity meant he would at times throw Rigby under the bus in order to preserve the image of himself as the responsible one. This is evident in earlier seasons as while Rigby was the catalyst for alot of the chaos, at times it was Mordecai who provoked him into those scams, the best example being the Brain Max episode where Mordecai would constantly brag about having a high school diploma to Rigby in order to feel better about himself. However the most important dynamic of their friendship is that Mordecai enjoyed being superior to Rigby as while he felt like his life sucked, he liked knowing that Rigby was even more miserable than him. Mordecai thrived being the responsible one and would lash out at Rigby for dragging him into trouble which is understandable. This resulted in both of them ending up in a dead end park job. Which we can all agree is a pretty fucked up thing to do to your friend. This becomes more apparent when it's revealed Rigby faked Mordecai's rejection letter so that they could continue to be friends. I think we can all agree that regardless of who you prefer, both have done horrible things to each other, however I'm gonna go more into detail here.įor the first couple of seasons, it's established that Mordecai is the responsible one while Rigby is the troublemaker that drags him down.
